Mäx & Mäleon: A Cargo Bike for Passengers or Dogs

In the world of cycling, versatility is key—whether that’s transporting a passenger, taking your furry friend for a ride, or carrying a hefty load. Enter Mäx & Mäleon, a German brand reinventing the cargo bike with its unique tilt mechanism and three-wheel design. Recent explorations into their models in Stuttgart showcase their innovative engineering and user-focused design.

Three Wheels That Adapt

At first glance, a Mäx & Mäleon bike may appear standard, yet the real magic lies in its two front wheels connected by a sophisticated hinge system. This clever construct allows the front end to lean into corners, creating a dynamic riding experience akin to a two-wheeler while maintaining the stability of a trike.

The tilt mechanism is central to the bike’s ethos, designed to combine the steadiness of a three-wheeler with the agility typically associated with two-wheeled bikes. This means it’s not just about carrying a load straight, but enjoying a smooth, controlled ride through turns as well.

During our test rides, the bike’s maneuverability was particularly impressive, even with its extended front. The lean-in feature certainly adds to the enjoyment, while the overall build remains firmly recognizable as a bicycle—a key reassurance for those experiencing a three-wheeled cargo bike for the first time.

A Genuine Seat for Passengers

We explored the Passenger Bike model, the very origin of Mäx & Mäleon about five years ago. The core idea? Passenger transport in cargo bikes shouldn’t be limited to small children.

Adults deserve comfort on these journeys too. Whether it’s cruising to a destination together, picking someone up from the station, or aiding those with mobility challenges, the front seating is designed as an integral element rather than an afterthought. Mäx & Mäleon explicitly markets this bike as suitable for adults and those with special mobility needs.

The model displayed during our visit emphasized a comfortable, upright seating position—a focus on a relaxed ride rather than a sporty one, ensuring comfort for both rider and passenger.

Customization plays a crucial role as well. During our demonstration, features like a lower step-through for easier access and adaptations for those with disabilities were highlighted. It’s comforting to know that those needing extra support won’t necessarily have to opt for a one-size-fits-all solution.

A Spot for Fido

Next, we examined the dog and cargo version of the bike. While retaining the same technical foundation, the design features a dedicated pet compartment at the front, complete with side walls, a cushion, and leash attachment points. This area can also be utilized for transporting goods when not occupied by a canine companion.

There’s more to this variant than just a cargo box; the steering pole positions the rider slightly forward, complemented by wider tires to lend a sportier character compared to the passenger model. The active feel encourages a more involved riding style while still providing an exciting experience through turns.

Despite their differing focuses, the two bike variants aren’t polar opposites. Both configurations can be tailored to meet specific transport needs. Mäx & Mäleon offers various layouts catering to both pets and cargo, aligning with individual requirements.

Power and Braking for Heavier Loads

This particular model combines a Bosch Cargo Line motor with an 800 Wh battery, featuring a torque enhancement from 85 to 120 Nm via software adjustments. Such power is critical for a cargo bike, especially considering it weighs between 60 to 70 kilograms before factoring in passengers or cargo.

These bikes employ chain drives, with the cargo-specific version showcasing an internal 3X3 gear hub. Shifting involves relieving pressure on the pedals. In contrast, the passenger bike features a Rohloff hub, with Enviolo also being an available option, though this would involve a reduction in available motor torque.

Just as essential as climbing hills is the ability to stop safely. The robust disc brakes, designed to handle heavy loads, are built by Fahrwerker and include a parking brake feature.

Locally Crafted and Customized

A thread of local craftsmanship runs through the heart of Mäx & Mäleon’s production. Much of the assembly takes place in Stuttgart, where bikes are hand-welded, underscoring the attention to detail that goes into each build. This approach supports the adaptability of their design, catering to varied passenger needs and riding preferences.

In our video report, we take you through both configurations, highlighting the intricate details that set them apart—from the tilt mechanism to interior designs. Additionally, a dedicated segment showcases the production facility, revealing not just the capabilities of these cargo bikes but also the craftsmanship behind their creation.
