Bosch UPS: Torque, Support Ratio, and Charging Speed in the Performance Duel with Avinox

Bosch has unveiled its latest Performance Upgrade 2.0, a game-changer that promises “faster acceleration and enhanced support,” boasting a stunning maximum torque increase up to 120Nm and support ratios reaching 600% for select Smart System mid-drive motors.

This update, which can be downloaded for free via the Bosch eBike Flow app, will soon be available on many Bosch-powered e-bikes equipped with eligible motors. It’s anticipated that a wave of high-performance e-MTBs and rugged SUV-style e-bikes will soon hit the market, all leveraging the cutting-edge Performance Line CX mid-drives.

The benefits of the increased torque will be particularly evident when tackling climbs, transporting heavy loads, or navigating challenging terrain. If previous performance upgrades are any indication, this overhaul is likely to set the stage for the emergence of high-performance e-MTBs capable of conquering any hill with ease.

Performance Highlights

This latest enhancement is exclusively compatible with the fifth-generation Performance Line CX mid-drives announced in late 2024, along with select Cargo Line and CX-R/Race motors. However, certain mid-drives will receive substantial support upgrades sans the torque boost. The specifics are as follows:

  • Performance Line CX (BDU384Y): Up to 120Nm torque and 600% support
  • Performance Line CX (BDU374Y): Up to 600% support
  • Performance Line CX-R (BDU386Y): Up to 120Nm torque and 600% support
  • Performance Line CX Race Limited Edition (BDU376Y): Up to 600% support
  • Cargo Line (BDU384Y): Up to 120Nm torque and 600% support
  • Cargo Line (BDU374Y): Up to 600% support
  • Performance Line PX (BDU347Y): Up to 600% support
  • In the USA/New Zealand: Performance Line Speed (BDU388Y): Up to 600% support
  • In the USA/New Zealand: Performance Line Sport (BDU347Y): Up to 600% support

This expansion in torque and power is particularly advantageous for heavier e-bikes that utilize Cargo Line motors. High-performance off-road machines are already highly regarded for their capability to navigate any terrain. One reviewer noted that with the Performance Line CX-equipped Megamo Reach, hill climbing was nothing short of phenomenal.

Charging Revolution

However, it’s not merely about sheer power; Bosch has seized this opportunity to announce a cutting-edge 120-amp charger, set to charge approximately six times faster than the industry standard of 2A. While its dimensions remain nearly unchanged, the weight does see a noticeable increase. The new charger is expected to launch in late 2026.

Additional features include an extended boost programmable overrun, drivetrain tensioner capability, enhanced trick check functionality, and a Live Data interface compatible with select Garmin Edge computers.

Competitive Landscape

This enhancement comes amidst Bosch’s ongoing competition with the emerging brand Avinox. Bosch’s latest update matches the torque output of Avinox’s M1 motor but falls behind the newly released M2S, which delivers an impressive 150Nm torque with a maximum temporary power of 1,500W.

Bosch appears cautious of potential backlash from media and regulatory bodies regarding the “ever-increasing power” trend and has maintained a maximum power limit of 750W. The new torque figure is applicable only in modes like Race, Turbo, eMTB+, Cargo, and Auto.

There’s also an overarching concern regarding the implications of escalating power output, particularly as highlighted by Cycling Electric—an issue that could threaten access to off-road areas for e-bike enthusiasts.
