Flit M2i Stakes New Claim Against Lightest Folding E-Bike
British aerospace engineering and bicycle manufacturer Flit has boldly asserted its claim to produce the lightest folding e-bike with the introduction of the M2i. Weighing in at a mere 13.3 kg, Flit proudly states that its latest creation is 500 grams lighter than Brompton’s titanium T line. What’s more, the M2i arrives at a significantly lower price point, set to retail for £2,999 compared to Brompton’s £5,799.
But does the claim of having the lightest folding e-bike stand up to scrutiny? The competition is fierce, with the Lemmo Zero, equipped with its front-loaded battery, trailing closely at just 200 grams heavier. However, the Flit M2i features a design that many may find preferable—its battery is integrated centrally within the frame, enhancing weight distribution rather than concentrating it at one end. The Lemmo positions its removable battery as a plus for digital nomads, suggesting it enables air travel with an e-bike; a nuanced point in this competitive landscape.
In a stunning achievement, Flit managed to minimize its weight without resorting to titanium. The bespoke aluminium construction draws inspiration from the chassis of supercars like the Lotus Elise and Aston Martin DB9, utilizing aerospace engineering principles throughout its design. With backing from Innovate UK, the Royal Academy of Engineering, and the Advanced Propulsion Centre, the M2i enhances the original bike’s bonded construction, which aims to eliminate the heat distortion typically seen in welded frames.
Alex Murray, Managing Director at Flit, stated, “Our mission was clear: build a 13 kg bike that not only looks good on scales but is also practical for everyday use. A folding e-bike earns its respect when you have to lug it up station stairs or fit it onto a crowded commuter train.”
The Flit M2i not only seeks to claim the lightest folding e-bike title but also places a strong emphasis on high-quality component upgrades, with many parts being locally sourced. The new specifications boast Lancashire-made Hope XCR Pro X2 hydraulic disc brakes, Goodyear Eagle F1 R tyres, an Italian fizik Vento Antares R3 saddle, TPU inner tubes, a hollow-pin KMC chain, and an ultra-light finishing kit. Collectively, these enhancements represent over £875 in upgrades from the previous M2 model.
Flit plans to roll out a limited batch of 10 M2i e-bikes by the end of August 2026, with additional limited runs scheduled as production capacity expands. Customers can also trade in existing Flit e-bikes as part of the purchase.
